I'll keep saying it over and over: 43% of the people in this county are below poverty, or one paycheck away from disaster. This is the working poor and debt enslaved or the disabled.
"People need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps! They should go take classes!" Many of us spend 90 minutes each way going to work in Nashville. That's three hours a day sitting in a car.
Rutherford County needs to stop encouraging businesses that create dead end jobs, or those that don't pay a living wage.
I will support policies that attract businesses that provide good, stable careers that offer personal growth for our individual residents. Though low paying businesses have their place, I will not be celebrating ribbon cuttings and ground breaking for businesses that create dead ends for our hard working residents.
We should attract these companies by providing a well educated workforce through our public education. Period. Incentivizing dead end jobs in a right to work state is a race to the bottom.
